This is a Gold Medal - Octagon sewing machine,

manufactured in the USA, from 1860-1868.

I've seen very few of these Octagonal sewing machines on Ebay, & most have had Square sewing plates.

This is 1, of only 2 that I have ever seen with the Round sewing plate - over several years of watching.

Dating: Info from the "Sewalot" website:

The Gold Medal Sewing Machine Company was established in 1860, prior to the American Civil War. ... in April of 1867 they moved to Orange Massachusetts and formed a new company... Johnson, Clarke & Co.

From 1860 to 1868 the Gold Medal Sewing Machine Co produced some beautiful and basic machines...

The early Gold Medal sewing machines were stunning little chain stitch models, and sold very well.

Gold Medal Octagon sewing machines were cheaper than their main competitors but that came at a price, for instance they did not bother plating their bare metal, they just polished it. The problem was that it rusted easily, so not many survive...

(Just as a time reference: ... Lincoln Dies & the Civil War ends in 1865.)

Listing Details: All Gears are in perfect condition - very clean, & turn easily. Her new Needle travels as intended, Feed Dogs go up & down, & she stitched well across the scrap I use to test machines = 3 Layers of Cotton, with stitching going down one side, then flipped, & stitched back along the opposite side, so you can see both the top & bottom stitches on the same piece. (See pic below, for enlarged view of stitches)

There are no cracks, or repairs on the machine. As always, there are the occasional screws, nuts, tensioners, or hand crank knobs that must be replaced, but overall, she is in her original condition, beneath her new paint job.

*** Any item of this age is going to show nicks & dings, as well as some pitting, which can be seen in the photos.

* 5.5" Deep (at the Sewing plate)
