F W Muller #14 - Toy

1910-1939

This is an FW Muller #14, toy sewing machine.

FW Muller was a German company, who began manufacturing toy sewing machines in 1888. Their earliest machines were Cast Iron, but soon they began to produce machines stamped out of sheet metal with tin plate.

This is one of their early Tin plate machines, also known as "Flatties" due to their obvious flat bodies.

The Model #14 was in production from 1910-1939, when the war broke out, eventually destroying the factory.

This particular design was often referred to as The Bird of Paradise, presumably due to the decorations.

These machines were intended to be toys, but were often functional machines, & could be used to stitch fabric in a pinch.

They are known for their Ornate bases, with decorative details in the artwork applied on all surfaces.

This machine was completely refurbished, and salvaged from her formerly very rusty condition.

SOLD on Ebay in 2018.

The original seller only offered photos of the machine from the back (& this was the best of those), so the remaining photos will just be After shots, from when I was done. The other side was equally rusty to this, & you'll just have to take my word for it. : )

The decals on this machine are Silver, which I just wanted to try, to see if I liked it. I also wanted to try for some child interest, with bright colors, butterflies, etc. The original decals/hand painting were beyond saving, so I just wanted to make it cute. I barely broke even on it, but it was fun to try it, & that's the point of any hobby - to have fun, & hopefully learn. As long as I don't lose money, I'll be fine. : )

FYI Most of the time, I can grind & polish the bare metal back to a nice shine, even if there's a bit of pitting. Sometimes, though, it's a lost cause to get a nice shine, so when it's too far gone, I am forced to paint them. I like the shiny bare metal better, but painted is better than black & pitted.
